QuaSM Half-Day Seminars & Holger Then's Talks

For now, I've decided to stop my arXiv posts since it si time-comsuming and have already accumulated a backlog. With pressure from various demands and duties, I think it would be simply wise just to drop it until another suitable time.

For this post, would like to publicise our ongoing seminars. Some weeks back we renamed our discussion group events into seminars simply to get it recorded as part of the lab's events (supposedly sounding more serious). We call it Quantum Science & Mathematics Seminars or for short QuaSM seminars. The full name can be thought of a superposition of {Quantum (Science & Mathematics)} and {(Quantum Science) & Mathematics}. The acronym, I supposed, more correctly reflects the group's interests, a kind of -ism. A colleague however pointed out it sounds like 'Kurang Asam'; well, that too. No different levels or hierarchies considered in these talks, all members & guests, academics and students, are on equal ground and away with those formalities.

Presently, we have Holger Then visiting us. We have decided to do two QuaSM half-day seminars (separated due to public holiday today and Ramadhan - to avoid finishing the event near the time of breaking fast). The first one has passed, held on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Bilik Tutorial 7, Maths Bldg (UPM) with the following talks:
  • 0900-1000: "The Cosmic Microwave Background Fluctuations (CMB) of the Picard Universe", (Holger Then, Oldenburg Univ., Germany)
  • 1000-1100: "Development of Mathematica Codes for Computation of Maass Cusp Forms", (Abubaker Ahmed Mohamed Siddig, UPM)
  • 1100-1200: "Canonical Group Quantization on Punctured Surfaces - Where Are The Differences?", (Hishamuddin Zainuddin, UPM)

The second installment is on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at BKSF206, Physics Bldg (UPM) with the following talks:

  • 0900-0930: "Estimating Free Energy Differences From Nonequilibrium Work Distributions", (Holger Then, Oldenburg Univ., Germany) - correction made, thanks Holger
  • 0930-1030: "Classifying Quantum States with the Gram Matrix", (Tay Buang Ann, UPM)
  • 1030-1130: "On Generalized Localization of Spectral Expansions by Riesz Means at Critical Line", (Anvarjon Akhmedov, UPM)
  • 1130-1230: "Contractions in Algebra", (Isamiddin Rakhimov, UPM)

Holger will give further the following talks:

  • "Maass Waveforms on the Modular Group" at INSPEM Weekly Seminar, September 19, 2008, 3.15pm, Bilik Seminar Al-Khwarizmi, INSPEM
  • "Maass Cusp Forms on Hecke Congruence Groups", yet to be scheduled
  • "Analytic Formulae for the Mechanical Properties of Radio Waves Emitted by an Antenna Array" at INSPEM Weekly Seminar, September 26, 2008, 3.15pm, Bilik Seminar Al-Khwarizmi, INSPEM

We particularly like to highlight his talks on Maass Waveforms would be of interest to number theorists and the numerical maths group. In fact we are using his modification of Hejhal's algorithm (see arXiv: math-ph/0305047) to compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of Laplacian on some punctured surfaces. An application of such computations is in cosmology as mentioned in his September 16 talk (see also arXiv: gr-qc/0404020).
